The Tree, Heather I. L. Pedersen, 1993 High fired stoneware, thrown and altered. Green slip was applied, then scratched though to create the design (sgraffito) I was trying to show some of the ways in which a tree can enrich ones youth. These are common images, I think, in many cultures throughout the world. People enjoying the out of doors, although perhaps not all people will identify with all three images. For myself, reading was my favorite pastime as a child, and still is. |

The Woodlands, Heather I. L. Pedersen, 2001 Low fired stoneware clay body, hand carved and stained This particular pot is only about 6 inches high, and took only a few hours to throw and trim. However, the carving of it was accomplished over a period of six months. I did not have a particular design in mind when I started it, but the works of Maxfield Parrish and Bev Doolittle were a great influence on me. This is probably my single favorite piece of everything I have done. Of course it might have something to do with carrying it around with me for 6 months, but it is a motif I keep returning to in my work. |
